About
Family Estrangement Awareness Week (FEAW) was founded to create discussion about an often painful, sometimes liberating experience many people carry in silence.
Getting cut off from a loved one can be an ‘ambiguous loss’ that hurts deeply, while initiating ‘no contact’ can be an act of self-care or safety that brings relief.
We acknowledge all sides of these different dynamics — without judgment, blame, or solutions. We simply want to reduce the stigma.
FEAW will create space for private contemplation and public conversations about an experience that ripples through entire families, sometimes for generations — because ongoing or personal conflict rarely stays between or only impacts two parties.
Get Involved
We’re asking individuals, civic and faith community leaders, mental health professionals, and the media, to help us acknowledge this reality without taking sides.
· Family Members — you aren’t alone. Visit our website to find resources, read shared stories, and learn how to observe the week in your own way.
· Clinicians or EAP Providers — FEAW will offer practitioner resources, client-facing materials, and a Recognized Provider designation.
· Potential Partners or Sponsors — this is a volunteer-run project so we’re seeking help to make Year 1 successful. Your support will cover start-up costs and raise our visibility.
Why FEAW
This project was inspired by Unanswered Letters From Estranged Parents — a curated anthology of letters, poems, and reflections from parents and grandparents living with the silence of unwanted estrangement. Learn more at www.unansweredletters.org.
While FEAW has a very different goal and wider audience, the response from our community made one thing clear: the need for more neutral, open discussion about family conflict is enormous, empowering, and healing.
